Beneath the surface, what we're seeing is status anxiety and professional identity threat. Much of the shaming and skepticism directed at AI tool users is an act of gatekeeping — an attempt to defend traditional hierarchies and methods rather than to assess the quality or impact of outcomes.
The Pattern Is Older Than the Internet
Every transformative technology has faced its moral panic moment. The printing press threatened scribes and clergy. Television was blamed for the erosion of family values. The early internet was cast as a haven for misinformation and social decay.
In each case, the loudest critics were rarely those most affected by the technology's risks. They were those most threatened by the redistribution of power and access that the technology enabled.
